Before You Build
Builders and Tradesmen's licences
All about licensing
Under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995, all persons or companies who carry out work as building contractors, or by those who perform building work with a view to selling or renting/leasing out property of any sort are required to be licensed. If a business operates as a partnership then all partners must hold their own licence. This restriction applies to all trades including painting and decorating, bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, tiling, concreting, plumbers, gas fitters, electricians, etc.
Conveyancers must be registered under the Conveyancers Act 1994, Land Agents as per the Land Agents Act 1994, and Real Estate Agents are also required to be licensed.
For more detailed and comprehensive information it is worth reading through the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs website covering licenses - http://www.ocba.sa.gov.au/licensing/ and also look up the specific trade organization for information on specific trade organization requirements.
